By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The United States of America reported more than one million COVID-19 infections in one day amidst the Omicron wave taking over the world.

John Hopkins University reported a total of 1,082,549 new COVID-19 cases on Monday alone. That’s the most ever reported by any country in the world in 24 hours.

The record high comes as states were trying to clear a backlog of tests that paused on New Year’s Day. The Monday total pushed the daily average over the last seven days to a record 480,723. The Wall Street Journal said that number practically doubles the daily average the country had last winter.

The United States also reported 3,361,912 cases over the past week, according to the John Hopkins University data. The previous highest record for one week was 2,823,692 from December 26, 2020, to January 1, 2021.

A total of 1,688 deaths were reported on Monday. The highest number in a day was 4,442 on January 20, 2021.

Up to now, the United States has reported 56,189,547 cases since the pandemic started. Out of that number, 827,748 persons have died in the US.

So far, 205,811,392 persons are fully vaccinated, representing 62.70 percent of the US population.
