By BBN Staff: A Caye Caulker couple is lucky to be free after being a non-custodial sentence was imposed in court on Tuesday following a guilty plea to a charge of obtaining property by false deception for conning a woman out of $550 for an iPhone on Facebook.

Michael Welch, 29, of the Skeleton Town area of Caye Caulker was arraigned in Belize City Magistrate’s Court before Magistrate Mannon Dennison on a single charge. He appeared in court unrepresented and plead guilty saying “This really teach me a lesson not to lend out any bank account to anyone.”

According to Rachel Moran, 43, however, on December 27, 2021, she contacted Welch’s wife Michelle over Facebook about buying an iPhone 8 Plus cellphone for her son to do online schooling. She was provided with Michael’s bank account number but when she deposited the $550 price for the phone, she never received the expected package as had been promised.

Magistrate Dennison noted this was not Welch’s first charge for a crime of dishonesty but took into consideration his guilty plea, sparing the court time, and then imposed a non-custodial sentence along with a fine of $1,000 plus $5 cost of court, which must be paid by April 30, 2022, or face 6 months in prison in default.
