Corozal cañeros warned over ‘fraudulent’ annual general meeting

By Aaron Humes: The Corozal Sugar Cane Producers Association’s (CSCPA) internal feud continues, as the recognized board of directors sent out an urgent press statement informing that a purported annual general meeting scheduled for the coming days was not called by its board.

Farmers are told, “not to believe the mischievous act of misinformation by a few orchestrators who forcefully and illegitimately want to take over the administration without authority and in an illegal way.”

The current board of directors has previously stated that it has the mandate of members not to hold an AGM at present due to the COVID-19 pandemic; but it has not held one in reportedly nine years, the length of its existence.

Nonetheless, the recognized CSCPA board has urged members to stay at home and not attend the “illegitimately sanctioned” meeting, and claims the orchestrators of the meeting are setting up the Association “to be decertified or suspended by Fairtrade International to bring even more economic suffering to all farmers who desperately need the assistance of the premium received from Fairtrade Certification.”

A press conference has been scheduled for this afternoon to provide further details and we’ll have more at that time.
