By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Marketing and Communications Director at the Football Federation of Belize (FFB) Yashmin Juan successfully completed a Sports Management post-graduate diploma programme from FIFA/International Centre for Sports Studies (CIES) through the University of the West Indies.

“Football is viewed as a man’s sport and that’s a concept I want to change,” said Juan. “To do that, however, I knew I had to prepare myself.”

According to the FFB, on congratulating Juan on her achievement, she is one of three Belizeans and the first Belizean woman to hold such a UWI/FIFA/CIES post-graduate diploma.

“Miss Juan successfully completed her course while being a fulltime employee at the Football Federation of Belize as well as having to juggle her spare time between football, school, and being a mother! Talk about girl Power!” said the FFB.

“Congratulations are definitely in order! Miss Juan continues her studies as she is now pursuing a Masters of Science in (Sports) Management at the University of the West Indies.”

The FFB said it takes pride in promoting and supporting women in football in all aspects, as a player, coach, administrator, or manager.

Juan said she started working in the administrative aspects of football in 2018 after volunteering as the public relations officer for the national football team. She then joined the FFB as the Marketing and Communications Director.

“While assuming an official post at the FFB, I realized that it is an uphill battle for women in the sport. My motivation does not only come from the passion I have in working with youths, but also in knowing the positive impact that sports has in the lives of individuals,” she said.

Juan said she is inspired by FIFA General Secretary, Fatma Samoura, who is considered the most powerful woman in sports in the world.

“It made me realize that being a woman in a man’s world is actually an advantage as women are able to accomplish great things even under pressure. Doing the FIFA CIES sports management course was a challenge for me in terms of juggling my time between work, school, and being a mother of a toddler. But I did it the best way possible … as a woman! Girl power!” she remarked.

Juan excelled in her pursuit of the Sports Management diploma and she is now tackling the Sports Management Masters at UWI.

As the FFB said, “Congratulations are definitely in order!”
