Football Federation’s Top League Closing Championship to start in February

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Verdes will be defending their Football Federation of Belize (FFB) Top League championship against the likes of Altitude, the San Pedro Pirates, Wagiya, Garden City, and Caesar Ridge as of February 5. At least that’s the expectation.

So far, no word has been forthcoming from the Football Federation of Belize as to the official starting date of the FFB Top League Closing Championship or a return by the Premier League of Belize. But we understand the teams are getting ready for Saturday, February 5.

Right now, with the Omicron variant sweeping the world, clubs from many countries and from different sports are reporting considerable numbers of COVID-19 infections. In some cases, games have had to be postponed or the teams have had to play with many bench or juvenile players. Just before the Christmas break, a number of countries that had allowed fans in the stadiums cut back on the liberties and banned fans from attending games.

Though the teams were able to play the opening FFB Top League, National Amateur Women’s League, and district tournaments before the Christmas break mostly without any infections, now things will surely change. Omicron is extremely contagious and once the action starts, cases are sure to surface.

The FFB still has four weeks to play with before the beginning of the closing championship. That’s if the Ministry of Health and Wellness doesn’t impose harsher measures by then.

Up to now, football has been played without fans. The FFB was hoping the Ministry of Health and Wellness would allow them back this month. But that is not going to happen. At least not for now.

In the meantime, we wait to see how things will turn out.
