By Aaron Humes: After the drama of recent years in which former president of the Police Association Corporal Eldon Arzu clashed with Commissioner of Police Chester Williams over his service, this year’s election appears to have gone largely drama-free.
Incumbent Chairman of the Board of the Association, Sergeant Jermaine Hyde, led a slate of six incumbents and one new participant into the election, with three others also offering themselves as candidates.
Hyde topped the polls with 535 votes, followed by fellow Sergeants Gilbert Martinez and William Usher; Corporals Shelene Myers, Reina Mendoza, and Pedro “Peter” Romero, and Constable Lorenzo Mendoza in that order.
During the election process on Thursday, Sergeant Hyde told reporters that they expected turnout to be rather low because a number of cops were out with COVID-19 or were just coming off shift. The election is limited to officers below the rank of Sergeant in representation and voting.
The Association is charged with looking out for the interests of the rank and file of the Department and Hyde noted that the Association will be looking into what it can do for sick officers.
Also, Sergeant Hyde expressed the hope that he can be re-elected as chairman, though he said it would be up to his fellow officers once re-elected. He has served a part-term holding over for promoted Sergeant Jane Usher before being elected once in his own right; the board chairman can only serve two terms per regulation.
