By Lucia Reyes: A very important planning meeting was held this week between the Ministry responsible for rural development and the team from the Resilient Rural Belize Programme (RRBP), which lies under the Ministry of Economic Development, to discuss areas of collaboration focusing on the needs of small farmers. Since the goals of the RRBP project align closely with those of the Ministry of Rural Transformation, the Resilient Rural Belize team felt it necessary to ensure that a special effort is made to foster close collaboration between these parties.

Following the meeting held, it is expected that closer collaboration will bring to fruition the goals of sharing weather and drought forecasts with farmers and associations, providing expertise and knowledge on underground water resources and the digging of wells, identifying villages and associations to assist towards their goals of self-sustainability, as well as developing profiles of farmers that would benefit from the technical assistance from international agencies such as the Green Climate Fund (GCF) and International Fund for Agriculture and Development (IFAD).

In an exclusive interview with Breaking Belize News (BBN), Dr. Geraldo Flowers, Programme Manager for the RRBP, said that “they are seeking collaboration with small farmers specifically in order to develop their capacity to produce food and to decrease poverty”. According to Dr. Flowers, the plan is to also work closely with farmers’ associations to enhance their capacity to produce agriculture commodities such as vegetables, peppers, honey and other commodities identified. As part of this plan they have organized a team to be in San Jose, Toledo district, and Santa Rosa in the Stann Creek district this weekend.

Chief Executive Officer (CEO) in the Ministry of Rural Transformation, Community Development, Labour and Local Government, Valentino Shal led the rural development team and Programme Manager for the Resilient Rural Belize Programme, including the Programme Manager, Dr. Geraldo Flowers, led the RRBP team.
