By Rubén Morales Iglesias: At 57% of persons with at least one COVID-19 vaccine, Belize is the country with the second highest vaccination rate in CARICOM according to the Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA).

According to CARPHA, Antigua and Barbuda lead the table of CARICOM countries with 60% fully vaccinated and 63% with at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine.

Belize follows in second place with 49% fully vaccinated and 57% with at least one dose.

Barbados is third with 50% and 54%, Guyana is fourth at 37% and 52%, and St Kitts and Nevis follow in fifth with 48% and 52%.

Jamaica with 19% and 24% and Haiti with 1.1% with at least one dose are 14th and 15th respectively.

The CARPHA report released on January 3 is based on the December 29, 2021, COVID-19 Vaccination Daily Report when Belize had a total of 230,348 persons who had received at least one dose (including the Janssen single dose) and 199,546 who were fully vaccinated.

The CARPHA report arrived at the percentages based on a 2021 population data for Belize which put our total number of inhabitants at 404,915.

Since then, a number of things have changed.

The January 4, 2022, COVID-19 Daily Report from the Ministry of Health and Wellness, as reflected in the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) statistics, has the total of persons who have received at least one dose at 230,789 (211,194 first dose and 19,595 single dose) and the total of fully vaccinated at 200,254.

The percentages moved up from 56.89% to 57% for those with at least one dose and from 49.28% to 49.46% for those who are now fully vaccinated.

However, if we go by the September 2021 statistics by the Statistical Institute of Belize that puts Belize’s population at 432,516, the percentages change as well.

The 200,254 fully vaccinated represents 46.30 % of Belize’s population. That is a 3.16% drop from 49.46%.

And the number of persons with at least one dose, 230,789, is actually 53.36%. That’s a drop of 3.65%.

So, like everything with statistics, it depends by which numbers you’re going by. This does not change the fact that within CARICOM, Belize is still in second position on the vaccination list. Other CARICOM associate states like the Cayman Islands have a vaccination rate closing in on 90% and Aruba is nearing 80%, figures that are way above the CARICOM group of nations.

In Central America, Belize is fourth with Costa Rica (69%), El Salvador (64%), and Panama (64%) leading the way.
