By Aaron Humes: Following Kerry Esquivel’s run-in with armed robbers who attempted to steal her motorcycle, only to be stabbed in the abdomen after pepper spraying the attackers, Police have advised residents to take all precautions while traversing the Marine Parade/Newtown Barracks area at night.

Assistant Superintendent of Police Fitzroy Yearwood commended Esquivel’s bravery though warned that results might not be the same for everyone.

“To be very honest with you, my best advice to people – your safety begins with you. If I know that a certain area is dark and secluded, I’d prefer not to be in that area at certain hours of the day. We have our patrols out there but like with everything else the criminals time the patrols, just like we, the police try to time the criminals. So, making yourself an obvious target makes it very difficult for us,” ASP Yearwood explained, noting that there are foot and motorcycle patrols and a stationary post in the vicinity of Golden Bay store, none of which will stop criminals looking for opportunities.

ASP Yearwood noted that at least one similar incident was reported in the general vicinity in September and as a former deputy commander he has had to chivvy individuals from the area. It is not intended for Belizeans to shy away, just to be more careful and watchful of the surroundings and be “on high alert.”
