Man remanded to jail for alleged arson of girlfriend’s home despite her request to drop charge

By BBN Staff: A Hattieville construction worker is spending time close to home on remand at the Belize Central Prison after being remanded for allegedly setting his girlfriend’s home on fire.

Alfonso Guzman, 44, appeared in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court on Monday unrepresented before magistrate Tricia Pitts-Anderson on a single charge of arson.

He is accused of visiting his girlfriend’s home in November of 2021 and setting fire to her home, destroying her roof, a wall, and several household items including the woman’s daughter’s uniform clothes.

His girlfriend, however, showed up to court requesting that the charge be dropped but was told she will need to withdraw her statement from the police.

No plea was taken from Guzman and he was granted in the sum of $5,000 plus one surety of the same, which he was unable to meet, hence he was remanded to prison. The conditions of his bail stipulate he must keep at least 100 yards away from the complainant and not interfere with her in any way. He is due back in court in March.
