Nearly 1,200 new COVID-19 cases reported over weekend as fourth wave ramps up

By Aaron Humes: The fourth wave of COVID-19 in Belize continues to take a devastating toll.
From Saturday to today, Monday, 1,181 new cases of the disease were reported, the most ever in a three-day period dating back to the beginning of the pandemic. On average, 393 cases were reported each day.

More than 5,000 persons were tested and anecdotal reports in Belize City say the line at the Belize Civic Center, a free testing site, stretched well down the block.
With only 123 recoveries to report, the number of active cases is now 5,320 – factors greater than where it was just two short weeks ago.
The number of persons hospitalized and in the intensive care unit rose after going down last week, and two more deaths have been reported.
In all, new Health Minister Kevin Bernard has a tough few weeks ahead trying to shepherd Belize through the latest wave.
We’ll have individual reports on the deaths, the hospital situation and map of where the cases are hitting hardest coming up shortly.
