By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security, and Enterprise sent out a notice reminding onion farmers to harvest only mature onions and to cure them properly to ensure the best quality onion.
“The Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security and Enterprise takes this opportunity to remind onion farmers that it is of utmost importance to provide buyers and consumers with the best quality of onion, by ensuring that onions are harvested only when mature and that they are thoroughly cured,” said the MAFSE notice in a social media post.
The MAFSE message to the onion farmers came after Minister Mai visited onion farmer Santiago Che in Cristo Rey, Corozal on Sunday. The Minister said that while the onions were of good quality they were not properly cured yet, so they were not ready to be out in the market. However, Minister Mai said Che had a good storage place and that it was just a matter of time.
“This is important because the curing process ensures the neck and outer scale leaves of the bulb are dried thoroughly so as to prevent the loss of moisture and rotting during storage.”
MAFSE said it “remains committed to supporting farmers and ensuring that consumers receive the best quality produce as we continue to plant, grow and build Belize”.
