By Aaron Humes: The addition of a religious affairs portfolio to his Ministry of the Public Service, Constitutional and Political Reform is, according to Minister Henry Charles Usher, something he has long asked for.
The devout Roman Catholic and grandnephew of the late Right Honorable George Price is now tasked with being a liaison particularly with the Council of Churches and less so with the Evangelical movement.
Usher told reporters on Monday: “I welcome the challenge; I welcome the opportunity of merging the Public Service with the Christian fundamental principles upon which our country is based. The Constitution of Belize is very clear. It advocates the supremacy of God, we’re a country based on the Supremacy of God and we must make sure that our Christian principles are adhered to, and what better way than to merge them with public service in the way we govern our country.”
The churches are represented in the Senate by Methodist minister Reverend Moses Benguche and have become increasingly vocal in recent years, particularly over issues of morality related to marijuana decriminalization, recognition of the LGBT population, and educational and social mores.
