Man killed by falling tree off Old Northern Highway

By Aaron Humes: An accident claimed the life of 48-year-old Victor Hugo Corrado Lima of Rockstone Pond village, Belize District, while out cutting trees on Tuesday morning.

Police say they were told by Marcello Santiago, also of Rockstone Pond, that he and Lima were cutting trees with a power saw when he heard a loud bang and found Lima lying on the ground with a big tree on top of him.

Santiago cut apart and removed the tree and went to get help. He says Lima was still breathing as he left but when he returned, he found him not breathing.

Lima was taken to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital with injuries and bruises and was treated until he was pronounced dead Tuesday evening just before 5 p.m.

Police have not indicated any suspicion of foul play.
