Olvin Rivas detained pending investigation of father’s murder in Stann Creek

By Aaron Humes: Olvin Rivas, a 23-year-old Belizean laborer of San Roman Village, Stann Creek District, has been detained pending investigation of what has been classified by police as murder.

On Tuesday morning police found the body of Salvador Amaya Rivas, 52, in the bush in the village with multiple chop wounds.

According to Police, Rivas arrived at Olvin Rivas’ residence in San Roman where his ex-wife Santa Ical and their five children have resided. Ical and Rivas had separated three to four months ago when she moved from Georgetown village.

The elder Rivas spent the night in the kitchen which is separate from the main house where the others slept.

At around 4 a.m. on Tuesday, Salvador awoke and tried to force open the door of the main house and attacked his son Salvador, choking him. Olvin Rivas allegedly armed himself with a machete and Salvador Rivas fled, chased by Olvin, who eventually caught him on the main road leading to the Southern Highway and there chopped him several times to the head and body.

From all indications those involved say it was a violent end to an abusive relationship, as explained by Commissioner of Police Chester Williams: “…what the son is saying, who is in police custody at this time, he is saying that for years he and his siblings have been abused by the father and he acted in defence of himself as he was being aggressed by his father.”

Police investigations continue.
