Man pleads guilty to being a gang member, court refuses to accept his plea and remands him to prison

By BBN Staff: A Belize City man was remanded to prison this week on charges of being a member of a criminal gang.

When he arrived in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, 32-year-old Dean Dawson pleaded guilty to being a member of the George Street Gang, telling the court that he and his brother-in-law are convicted gang members and that it was “just his turn” to go to jail. He pleaded to the court for leniency as he is the expectant father of a soon-to-be-born child.

However, Senior Magistrate Tricia Pitts -Anderson, refused to accept his guilty plea and instead entered an equivocal plea of not guilty on his behalf.

Dawson was then remanded to the Belize Central Prison until March 10, 2022.
