Compounds in cannabis can prevent COVID-19 infection, said a study by researchers affiliated with Oregon State University, Forbes magazine reported.

The research, “Cannabinoids Block Cellular Entry of SARS-CoV-2 and the Emerging Variants,” was published online by the Journal of Natural Products on Monday.

According to the study, two cannabinoid acids found in hemp varieties of cannabis, cannabigerolic acid (CBGA) and cannabidiolic acid, (CBDA) can prevent the virus from penetrating cells and causing infection by binding to the spike protein of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes Covid-19.

The study was conducted by researcher Richard van Breemen of the Oregon State’s Global Hemp Innovation Center in collaboration with scientists at the Oregon Health & Science University.

“These cannabinoid acids are abundant in hemp and in many hemp extracts,” van Breemen said according to Dayton 247 Now.

“They are not controlled substances like THC, the psychoactive ingredient in marijuana, and have a good safety profile in humans.”

Van Breemen said the research showed the hemp compounds were equally effective against variants of SARS-CoV-2, including Alpha and Beta.

Van Breemen said that though more research needs to be done, their study shows the cannabinoids can be developed into drugs to prevent or treat Covid-19. He added that the research shows the cannabinoids were effective against new variants.
