By Aaron Humes: The Belize Tourism Board (BTB) has announced that under its new safe travel standards, visitors must apply for Belize Travel Health Insurance, a mandatory policy to protect travelers against incurred medical and non-medical expenses arising from a positive COVID-19 test.
The health insurance plan is in addition to established regulations, such as pre-approved accommodation at a Gold Standard property and presentation of a negative COVID-19 test on arrival at the Airport or other borders when they re-open, regardless of vaccination status, except children under five years of age.
The policy costs a relatively cheap BZ$36 and insures up to US$50,000 in medical expenses related to COVID treatment for up to 21 days. The plan will be legislated in public health regulations and cover lodging expenses due to quarantine up to US$2,000 (US$300 per day); emergency assistance service including air evacuation and emergency expenses related to pre-existing conditions, trip cancellations, and expenses incurred by COVID-19 positive travelers for extended stays.
The policy should be purchased prior to arrival but can be bought on arrival at the International Airport or at land borders, but it is required with the exception of Belizean nationals, permanent residents, and travelers with QRP or Long Stay status and flight crews.
The Board says in closing, “The new Travel Health Insurance mandate underscores Belize’s commitment to health and safety, enhancing travel confidence and giving visitors peace of mind to schedule that well-deserved vacation for 2022 and beyond.”
