Benque Viejo del Carmen organizations will have a special Tribute Mass in honour of the late Right Honourable George Cadle Price on the first George Price Day, Saturday, January 15.

According to the Benque House of Culture coordinator Nalleli Yacab, the organizations have planned a Tribute Mass in honor of the ‘Father of the Nation’ at 6:00 pm at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in Benque Viejo del Carmen.

Ian Yacab and Los Hijos del West Marimba Ensemble will be accompanying the Mass.

“We are holding the Tribute Mass as Belize celebrates a Public & Bank Holiday for the first time as a tribute to the legacy of the Prime Minister, the Right Honourable George Cadle Price on his birthdate,” said Yacab.

“Partners and stakeholders of the community of Benque Viejo del Carmen have taken the lead to celebrate through a Tribute Mass in honour of all his contributions to Belize.”

Yacab said leading organizations such as the Benque House of Culture (NICH), Benque VIejo Town Council, Community Of Artists for Cultural & Historical Endeavours (CACHE) & Los Hijos del West, have prepared the special Tribute Mass at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church.

The present Government dedicated January 15, the birthday of the late Prime Minister, as a national holiday. George Price was born on January 15, 1919.

Price was First Minister and then Premier before Independence and Prime Minister after Independence. He was the head of government from 1961 to 1984 and from 1989 to 1993.

“No other political leader has had a greater impact and influence on our identity and sense of being Belizean than George Price,” said Prime Minister John Briceño in his message on the first George Price Day.

“His life, beliefs, and values have been the guiding light in the destiny of Belize taking it from a once backward colony of Britain to a young, dynamic, sovereign, democratic Central American state in the Caribbean region,” echoed former Prime Minister Said Musa.
