By Rubén Morales Iglesias: A Belizean doctor who is Chief Medical Officer in Anguilla, Dr. Aisha Nicole Andrewin, has been recognized in the Queen’s New Year Honours 2022 as Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for services to Public Health in Anguilla.

“Dr Aisha Andrewin, as Chief Medical Officer, has provided committed and diligent public service to Anguilla,” said the Anguilla Governor’s Office.

“Her dedicated efforts have resulted in lasting changes to the medical environment and to the professional development of healthcare workers in Anguilla.”

The Governor’s Office praised Dr. Andrewin for her work during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Most recently, in response to the Covid-19 pandemic, through her specialist expertise and skilled leadership, she has played a pivotal role in the development of national policies and regulations that have enabled Anguilla to remain relatively unscathed from the Covid-19 pandemic.”

Dr. Andrewin is the daughter of Belizeans, structural engineer Phillip E. Andrewin and the late Patricia Andrewin nee Moore.

As an epidemiologist, she’s worked both in Belize and Anguilla.

Dr. Andrewin earned her medical qualifications at the University of the West Indies in Trinidad and Tobago. She holds master’s degrees in international public health and public health in disasters (epidemiology and research track).

In Belize and Anguilla, she has ample experience in non-communicable diseases (NCD) having served as national NCD focal point in Belize. She was also chair of the NCD Commission in Anguilla and supervisor of the Chronic Disease Unit.

Dr. Andrewin also involved herself in regional and international initiatives such as the piloting of the Caribbean Public Health Agency’s (CARPHA) minimum dataset for NCD surveillance in 2006.

Dr. Andrewin is a qualified classical pianist and is currently completing a doctorate in Epidemiology.
