Police investigating murky circumstances of police officer’s stabbing

Posted: Monday, January 17, 2022. 5:36 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: An attack on a police officer is always considered serious, but this weekend’s incident in Belize City has engendered more questions than answers, to say the least.

Police Officer Akeem Jones and a friend were driving at the corner of Water Lane and West Street, Belize City on Friday night when they came upon two men apparently beating up someone he, Jones, recognized.

According to Jones, he told his friend to park at the street side and exited the vehicle to separate the brawlers, but the attackers apparently turned on him and began to beat him while their previous victim escaped. Jones got away but not without harm as he suffered stab wounds to his left hand and behind his right ear. He then went home and then to the hospital for treatment.

One person has been detained, however, according to Assistant Superintendent of Police Fitzroy Yearwood speaking at a press briefing this morning, the matter is still under investigation.

“This officer was at an establishment and I am certain you are aware of the fact that even though the curfew [has] been extended on weekends, that it doesn’t extend for the opening of bars and other gambling establishments other than the casinos. But we are investigating this matter; he was stabbed, indeed. The nature surrounding the stabbing incident is being investigated because the establishment has surveillance video, and we will do further review,” ASP Yearwood said.
