By Benjamin Flowers: The United Democratic Party (UDP) called on the Minister of Tourism and Diaspora Affairs and the Belize Tourism Board to clarify and provide more information regarding the recently imposed mandatory Belize Travel Health Insurance for visitors coming to Belize.

Today the party asked for full disclosure on the procurement guidelines employed to select the insurance provider for this proposed, mandatory Belize Travel Health Insurance Policy as well as the pertinent details on the contract arrangements that have been finalized to facilitate the initiative. The UDP conceded that mandatory travel insurance is not a new idea in the face of the pandemic, but that mandating that visitors purchase the particular policy from a specified insurance provider is concerning.

“As presented, this mandatory travel insurance scheme of US $18.00 per person is tantamount to yet another tax on visitors coming to Belize. Travelers with existing insurance coverage should be able to provide proof thereof upon arrival; be able to ‘opt in’ for travel insurance or, alternatively sign a liability waiver. In addition, if the travel insurance is optional, hotels can be creative in offering packages that would provide a competitive advantage for travel to Belize,” the UDP said.

The parts stressed that the mandatory insurance may make Belize less competitive than other destinations in the region, which the country simply cannot afford in light of visitor arrival data for the first 11 months of 2021 being around 60 percent under arrival figures for 2019. The party went on to say that it is concerned that the insurance scheme may end up harming national recovery efforts.

“All measures and requirements should be geared to incentivize travel and increase visitor arrival numbers, while at the same time maintaining optimal conditions for the safety of citizens and visitors alike. Unless absolutely necessary, we should avoid implementing mandatory policies that will serve to deter travel to Belize,” the UDP added.
