By Rubén Morales Iglesias: It’s not an easy task to knock out the defending champions, but Guineas Grass FC managed that feat by defeating Progresso on Sunday in the semifinals of the Orange Walk Football Association 1st Division Championship at the Louisiana Government School field.
Guinea Grass knocked Progresso out of the race 4-2 in a penalty-kicks shootout after a 1-1 draw.
Dedron Baptist scored a spectacular goal for Progresso in the 14th minute before Guinea Grass equalized through the efforts of Francisco Rivas in the 27th.
Unable to untie the 1-1, the game had to be resolved in the shootout.
Brian Westby, Leonardo Can, Miguel Yco, and Charles Tillett converted their opportunities for Guinea Grass while only Jaheim Augustine and Tyriq “Hammer” Ciego did so for Progresso.
Guinea Grass will now clash with the Caribbean Rum Boyz in the Orange Walk First Division Final at 2:30 pm on Sunday, January 23.
