By BBN Staff: Career politician and “Party Whip” for the United Democratic Party (UDP) Michael Finnegan turns 72 today.

Born Michael Myvett in 1951, his name change to Finnegan in the 1970s is closely linked to his work in social advocacy as a former member of the United Black Association for Development (UBAD).

Finnegan, who entered electoral politics in 1965 and retired in 2017, has been a six-time area representative, radio talk show host, hosted a cooking show, and even has a market named after him.

Known for a unique style of humor, Finnegan served in public life with a reputation to speak his mind – even if people were offended by what he had to say.

His nephew and successor to the Mesopotamia Division, Shyne Barrow spoke with Breaking Belize News (BBN) earlier conveying his well wishes to the political icon.

“I and the good people of Mesopotamia wish him health and strength and thank him for the contributions he has made to so many lives in the division and the people of this country,” Barrow said.

Other political colleagues have since taken to social media to wish him a happy birthday.
