58-year-old man accused of slapping girlfriend during dispute granted bail

By BBN Staff: A 58-year-old man from Hattieville is out on bail after being charged with slapping his girlfriend during a domestic dispute.

Cleveland Norman Poper appeared unrepresented in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court today, answering to a charge of common assault on Kristen Murrillo.

He pleaded not guilty to the charge and, since there was no objection, he was granted bail in the sum of one surety of the same.

The Magistrate was concerned about the proximity of the complainant and the accused, but Poper said in court that Murillo had already moved out of the house they once shared. As part of the conditions of his bail, he is not to have any contact with Murillo while the matter is before the courts.

Poper is due back in court on March 21.

Allegations against him are that he and Murillo got into an argument yesterday and in the exchange, he slapped her in the face several times.
