After signing a Scholarship Program Cooperation Agreement with Primer Minister John Briceño on Monday, the Executive President of Central American Bank for Economic Integration (CABEI) Dante Mossi visited Corozal Free Zone and Punta Gorda.

According to CABEI, Mossi is in Belize “to reinforce strategic partnerships in this member country and discuss initiatives in key development sectors”.

In his meeting with Prime Minister Briceño, he discussed the implementation of the Integral Security Program and support for potential projects in agriculture, health, MSMEs (Micro, Small, Medium Enterprises) and renewable energy.

According to CABEI, the Belize Integral Security Program “consists of the development of actions aimed at the rehabilitation of existing civil works, construction of new works and provision of equipment to the institutions that oversee Belize’s national security”.

The Scholarship Program Cooperation Agreement he signed with Briceño provides Belize with a grant which will help students complete their secondary education. The agreement for a total of $1.25 million is to finance 225 new scholarships for a period of five years for children and adolescents who meet the criteria established in the Bicentennial Scholarships Program approved by CABEI.

On Tuesday, Mossi visited the Corozal Free Zone (CFZ) where he met with the CFZ management team including Chief Executive Officer Neri Ramirez and Corozal Town Mayor Rigoberto Vellos. They discussed opportunities to support trade and economic reactivation of the country following the pandemic.

From the CFZ, Mossi headed to Belize Sugar Industries, ASR Group, which CABEI referred to as “one of the largest employers in the country” that has “an annual milling capacity of 1.3 million tons of sugarcane and farms sugarcane as well as receives cane from more than 5,000 independent Belizean farmers”.

On Wednesday, Mossi visited Punta Gorda where he met with the Minister of Rural Transformation, Oscar Requena and Punta Gorda Mayor Charles Salgado.

The CABEI president also met with Elvis Requena, Project Coordinator for the Belize Integral Security Program which is financed by CABEI.

On Wednesday afternoon, Mossi met with the Banana Growers Association which comprises 22 farms that grow and export fresh quality bananas from Belize.

“The banana industry is the third export crop of Belize behind sugar cane and citrus and provides a significant base for employment and income generation in the country,” said CABEI.
