Police officer outnumbered trying to stop armed robbery

Posted: Wednesday, January 19, 2022. 11:12 am CST.

By Aaron Humes: A police officer tried to take on two armed robbers singlehandedly on Tuesday morning but was unable to stop them from taking a woman’s purse near Constitution Park.

The officer reported that just before 8 a.m. he was walking through the park from Johnson Street towards Woods Street when he saw a woman shouting for help.

At the same time, a dark-skinned man ran past him but he continued toward the woman, who had just had her purse snatched by a man he recognized. This was a clear-skinned man about 5-foot-5 whom he tried to block by stepping into his path.

The thief tried to find his way around the officer by throwing the purse to his accomplice – the man who had earlier run past the officer – but it fell to the ground. The cop tried to pick it up but the second pulled out a firearm and pointed at him, telling him to move. The officer left the purse on the ground and saw the culprits take it and run toward Banak Street, escaping.

Investigations continue.
