By Aaron Humes: According to information obtained by Breaking Belize News (BBN) from a trusted source, two Belize City Councilors are being questioned as to their involvement in certain goings-on as dissension raises its head at City Hall.

Minutes of meetings of the Council are publicly available on the Council’s website and BBN obtained copies of its most recent meeting which disclosed that Councilor Micah Goodin, who recently had his key portfolios of sanitation and maintenance removed, is being asked to account for the remaining $5,000 of $10,000 he obtained from the Council by motion to sponsor a one-day Christmas Cup football tournament at the MCC Grounds.

The top prize for the Cup was $5,000 and the questions being asked are what the remaining $5,000 was used for, and if so was it properly accounted for.

Another Councilor, Michael Novelo, made a motion supported by Councilor Goodin for the Council to lease the former Pier One establishment at BTL Park to a businessman for the purpose of opening an Italian restaurant for five years. The motion was made and approved by a majority of the Councilors even though in its manifesto for last year’s elections, “Together as One”, the council had promised that the premises was to be designated as a student hub. Following the approval of the motion, the businessman was expected to move forward with the Italian restaurant.

We also noted that via those minutes that it was councilor Michael Novelo who brought the motion to have the council discontinue engaging in tombing activities and thereby relinquishing it to private undertakers. This decision has since been publicly announced and implemented by City Hall.

Councilor Goodin could not be reached for comment. Councilor Novelo refused an interview by phone, saying only that a press release would be issued by a certain group of councilors tomorrow, though not what it was about.
