By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The first Canoe race of 2022, the 15th Annual Loewen’s Hardware Boom to Manatee Canoe Race is all set for Saturday.
President of the Belize Canoe Association Elvin Penner said the race starts at 10:00 am on the Burrell Boom riverbank and finishes at Mile 8 ½ at Manatee Lookout on the Philip Goldson Highway.
The race will feature five C2 categories: Men’s, Women’s, Mixed, Masters, and Junior.
D&A/Guydis Canoes comprised of Wilberto Daniels and Ramon Gillett won the last Father’s Day Manatee to Boom race held in 2021 after the COVID-19 lockdown on Father’s Day June 20.
Team CORE made up of Daniel Cruz, Amado Cruz and Jerry Cante won on January 18, 2020, in 1:25:38.
The winning teams will receive a trophy and cash prizes. The top three in each category will receive medals. Cash prizes for second and third-place teams will depend on the number of teams that enter per category, said Penner.
Due to COVID-19, the BCA has made changes. Teams will consist of only two paddlers to ensure social distancing during the race and the support teams will be limited to three persons per team. Those persons will need to be listed on the registration forms.
Registration must be done in advance by email to firstname.lastname@example.org or WhatsApp at 501-610-3655. Payment for entries must be made in advance as well and deposit slips emailed to email@example.com.
Penner said the race sponsors are Loewen’s Hardware, Architectural Accents. Joseph & Taylor LTD, and Cayo Steel Works.
