Commissioner of Police says Faber will not receive different treatment, dismisses political dimensions

Posted: Thursday, January 20, 2022. 5:30 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: Commissioner of Police Chester Williams was frank as promised as he detailed how Police are handling the complaint against and impending arrest of Leader of the Opposition Patrick Faber.

“The fact again, with these domestic issues, we tend to at times downplay them or underplay them, and then it turns out to be worse at the end of the day. So, in order for us to make sure that should something more serious happen down the road, we can always say that yes, the [victim] came to us but then she went to the court, did X, Y, Z, and our hands are clean,” said the Commissioner.

The Commissioner did not directly confirm that there is, as alleged, a sort of protocol for handling these matters when involving persons of high society: in addition to police receiving a call from attorney Richard “Dickie” Bradley indicating that Faber had spoken to him and there would be arrangements to come in; that has not yet happened. Williams also said he had not personally spoken to Faber since the report was made.

In response to the “pattern of behavior” that Faber appears to have established where in at least one prior incident a report was made and then recanted, the Commissioner said the wishes of the complainant are to the best effort of the Department respected; if there is any indication of request of court action, no matter who it is, it will be followed up, and if there is any recanting to be done, it will be through the courts.

“I have always said that no woman or child should be abused at the hands of the person that who is supposed to love them and care for them, and so when these things happen, we have to take a full look at it and ensure that we do what we can to address the situation adequately,” the Commissioner emphasized.

That includes today’s briefing in response to the swirls of speculation; the Police, the Commissioner said, will not be accused of trying to hide anything for anyone.

It also includes batting away claims that the Police would not “go as hard” on politicians previously accused as they have here, or that they are serving the agenda of the party in opposition to the United Democratic Party; said Williams, “Judge me based on me, and not based on my predecessors,” and that if what is alleged is true, the ruling party does not appear to have anything to do with it.

With that said the Commissioner indicated that when Faber is brought in, he will be treated similarly to anyone who faces similar charges and will not be specifically embarrassed: he will be given his charges, brought to court, arraigned, offered a plea and dealt with the same as in any other case. Faber will be arrested as that is part of police procedure; if he attempts to leave the country, the Police will be on their toes at the Airport and other points of entry, though the Commissioner doesn’t believe he would go that far.
