Island tour operator and boat captain convicted in Belize City Magistrate’s Court on drug charges

By BBN Staff: Two San Pedro residents, one boat captain, and a tour operator were convicted of drug charges in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court today.

Thirty-five-year-old tour operator Gerson Marziel Cordon, and 33-year-old boat captain Jose Edwardo Cowo appeared unrepresented, charged with being in possession of 29.7 grams of marijuana and 3.6 grams of cocaine.

San Pedro Police searched their golf cart on Wednesday, where they found the drugs in a cup holder.

They both pleaded guilty to possession with respect to the marijuana and were fined $255 each plus $5 each cost of court. They were both given until March 30, 2022, to pay in default 2 months imprisonment.

Cowo additionally pleaded guilty to the possession of the cocaine and was fined $2,000 plus a $5.00 cost of court in which he was given until June 30, 2022, to pay or face a year in jail for default.

Despite his sentence, Cowo remains in police custody and will be remanded to the Belize Central Prison, as it was discovered that he has an unpaid fine of $800 for a charge of harm picked up in 2020. The magistrate said that he cannot be released until he has paid at least $400, which up to the end of the day he has not managed to do.
