Minister Jose Abelardo Mai in isolation with COVID-19, Ministry offices closed

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security, and Enterprise (MAFSE) has been hit by COVID-19. Minister Jose Abelardo Mai is in isolation with COVID-19 and all the offices in his Ministry are closed for two days.

The Minister was diagnosed with the coronavirus on Monday and has been in isolation since then at his home. After that, other cases surfaced at MAFSE forcing the Ministry to close its offices on Thursday and Friday.

“I got COVID-19 on Monday this week and I haven’t been able to go to my office since then,” said Minister Mai to Breaking Belize News (BBN).

“I’m recovering but I’m concerned about my lungs because I have a history with pneumonia, so I have to take care of myself. I had cough, I was stuffy, I had uneasiness in my chest. My lungs feel achy, a little painful. I didn’t have fever.”

Minister Mai said he’s been under medication.

“I’ve been taking a combination of medication and home remedies,” he said as he coughed and cleared his throat.

If he keeps recovering well, Minister Mai should be out of isolation on Tuesday.

He said he learned on Wednesday that the MAFSE offices were being closed.

“I was made to understand yesterday that the Ministry’s offices in Central Farm are closed. I think Show Grounds also closed. There are a number of cases. My office upstairs has also closed for sanitizing. By Monday they should be open.

In effect, MAFSE announced on Wednesday that it was closing its headquarters and a number of its offices for sanitization, including the National Agriculture and Trade Show Grounds and the headquarter offices at the Lands Building in Belmopan, the Cayo and Central Farm offices, and the Mechanic and Carpentry Sections in Central Farm.

The Ministry of Agriculture office will reopen for business hours at 8:00 a.m. on Monday, January 24, 2022.
