By BBN Staff: Thirty-three-year-old Winston Joseph James Junior also known as “Tanga” was shot dead as he drove on East Collet Canal on a rainy Friday morning, just minutes after appearing in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court on two separate matters.
James appeared in court this morning alongside co-accused Brandon Tillett, brothers, John and Sheldon Grinage, for professing gang membership following a video of them wielding illegal firearms that went viral on social media.
That matter was adjourned and the others left the courthouse, but James had to stay behind for another matter before Justice Herbert Lord in the Supreme Court, where the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions is seeking to have his bail revoked.
That matter was also adjourned and James’ attorney Orson Elrington said James went to his office right after court and stayed there for about five minutes. Moments later, James was shot at the corner of Bishop Street and West Canal. Police say that James was driving with a passenger, 30-year-old Marybeth Wade when a man standing on the corner opened fire on them, hitting James in the neck and Wade in the lower left arm.
He tried to drive off but ended up crashing his vehicle on Prince Street, and was then taken to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Wade, who had given a sworn statement in one of James’s court matters that the drugs he was being charged for belonged to her, was treated and is currently listed in stable condition at the KHMH.
Police are investigating the matter.
Notably, James had become somewhat of a local celebrity after several salacious live streams posted to Facebook detailing various trists and lovers quarrels that hundreds of Belizeans tuned in to watch and garnered tons of online exposure, memes, and commentary.
