As gun violence flares, Police Commissioner says department doing all it can but needs the public’s help

Posted: Monday, January 24, 2022. 2:18 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: Last week there was a spike in gun violence with five men shot and killed, three of whom were killed on Friday. In response, the Belize Police Department says it is doing what it can but is calling on the public to help in the response to the problem.

The carnage started with the shooting of 35-year-old Septimus Ritchie on Electric Avenue Wednesday night, followed by the shooting of 26-year-old Michael Lambey in the Jane Usher Boulevard area on Thursday. Friday’s first victim was Winston James, also known as Tanga, killed on East Canal. A shooting incident in Burrell Boom that evening claimed the life of shop owner, 35-year-old Leslie Gillett and before the night was out the violence had returned to Belize City, with the shooting death of 33-year-old Virgil Coburn in the Belama Phase 1 area.

Speaking on the issue today, Commissioner of Police Chester Williams said that police are doing what they can, and quickly addressed the situation resulting in no further gun violence since Saturday.

He stressed that despite all the efforts of the police, however, there will be those that continue to break the law.

“That is where the citizenry must play their part in ensuring that when they see something they say something so that we can act accordingly,” Williams said.

He also said that the police have been working with various other organizations in an effort to address the issues affecting the youths who often perpetuate violent crime, as those issues need to be looked at holistically.
