By Benjamin Flowers: As widely speculated after his public fallout due to allegations of domestic abuse last week, today Patrick Faber officially announced his resignation as both the Leader of the Opposition in Parliament and as Party Leader for the United Democratic Party.
In a prerecorded message issued this afternoon, Faber maintained that the information circulating about him and his fiancee Dr. Shanika Arnold are not “the facts,” and he stressed that he could not have his party endure the ills that come with those allegations.
“I have made a decision to focus my attention on giving my fiancée, in this time of need, my full attention, and support. While doing so, I will also work on myself. To ensure that in the future times I can come to be as best I can the advocate for Belize’s development that you’ve all known me to be in the past,” Faber said.
Faber said that his resignation will be final on January 31. However, he will continue to represent the people of the Collet constituency.
Earlier today the People’s United Party (PUP) had issued a statement calling for Faber’s resignation in light of the severity of the allegations made against him, noting that this is not Faber’s first time facing such allegations.
The UDP has not yet officially announced who will take Faber’s place.
