Commissioner Williams weighs in and defends his stance on Patrick Faber domestic abuse situation

Posted: Monday, January 24, 2022. 6:25 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: Last week, Patrick Faber said that his appearance in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court was based on political instructions given to the Commissioner of Police Chester Williams, rather than the allegations of domestic abuse that were made against him and later retracted by his fiancee Dr. Shanika Arnold.

Today, the Commissioner, who has very publicly expressed his disdain for domestic abuse in the past, reiterated his stance and suggested that every right-thinking person should be outraged by what Faber was accused of doing.

“Our women and children do not deserve to be abused by men,” Williams said. “This should not be tolerated and as a society, we have to stand in solidarity with those victims of domestic violence.”

He went on to say that domestic violence is not a private matter, it is a crime and should be a public matter. Williams emphasized that victims should not be made to suffer in silence, as it causes even more harm to them. He also said that making issues of domestic violence public are even more important when it involves “people of influence.”

“It cannot be that those of us who are of influence would want to save ourselves at the expense of the dignity of the victims,” Williams added. “We must always think what the consequences of our actions will be before we act and not after. Because if we think after we beg for them to retract or to withdraw to save us and then they remain to be hurt and suffer, it cannot be.”

A leaked copy of Arnold’s statement to police suggests that the incident involved a hammer and a knife. Faber has since resigned as Leader of the Opposition in Parliament and Leader of the United Democratic Party, but maintains that the information being circulated regarding the incident between him and Arnold, “are not the facts.”
