By Aaron Humes: The stand-off between the Port of Belize Limited and the Christian Workers Union (CWU), President Evan “Mose” Hyde reminded, is a long-standing issue, one he tied to the privatization of the Port many years ago. The CWU addressed the matter during a press briefing this morning.
After years of suffering and more recently not only the rejection of their choices to be foremen, but also the decision of the Port of Belize to ask for a reduction of gang members and tangentially to accept hard-earned retirement benefits as part of their compensation, the stevedores have had enough, and the Government must intervene, Hyde asserted.
Hyde said no worker would accept the conditions being asked for by the Port, and those who are affected must put themselves in the stevedores’ shoes.
