Could UDP have stopped Patrick Faber?

Posted: Tuesday, January 25, 2022. 9:59 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: In what appears to be the smoking ruins of Patrick Faber’s political career and the current incarnation of the United Democratic Party (UDP), some are asking: could the party have done more to rein Patrick in and prevent disaster?

Party Chairman Michael Peyrefitte doesn’t think so: “If I were six feet tall and slim and weigh 200 pounds, I’d be in the NBA making a hundred million dollars – I don’t know. I mean, we made a decision at the time, that we thought that given the fact that we’re all human – I personally came out and said the last time with the video that people were making it out to be worse than what it appeared on the camera to be,” referring to the incident in which he attacked a door while berating his child’s mother in the child’s presence. Still, without context, it was decided after discussion that if Faber’s version of events was true and he got help, he said, then he could move on with the understanding that it would not happen again – until it happened again.

And Peyrefitte denied that he personally and neither the party was not more tolerant of behaviour because it was caused by a man, pointing out that prominent women and women’s organizations took some days to speak out, naming the Minister of Human Development, the Special Envoy’s Office and even those in the party. Ultimately, he felt he had to say something if no one else was going to, as even up to last week the matter had been put aside. Neither, he said, did he or anyone else pressure Faber to resign, and the choice was one he made.

The Party’s Constitution does not specifically speak to criminal activity, in this case, domestic violence, barring a UDP member from running for office, but its Ethics Committee does look at certain criteria covering general behavior – and it would apply to declared candidates to replace him, one of whom was similarly accused and similarly had the complaint withdrawn as in Faber’s case. (Notably, as the charges are dropped for want of prosecution, neither Faber nor the candidate in question has a criminal record of this type.)

Faber has repeated publicly that there is more to the story but he is not prepared to speak in the interest of maintaining his relationship with his accuser/fiancee.

As for the PUP’s call for Faber to resign from the House as Collet representative, Peyrefitte sarcastically said it was brave of them but pointed out that there is the Recall of Elected Representatives provision that would go into effect within 18 months of the first sitting of the House of Representatives – in January of 2021.
