By Rubén Morales Iglesias: One day before the Belize Men’s National Football Team travels to Nicaragua for a couple of friendlies against that country’s National Team, the Football Federation of Belize (FFB) will present Spanish coach David Pérez Asensio as the BMNT’s new head coach on Tuesday.

Thirty-nine-year-old Pérez, who is from Madrid, has been coaching Verdes since July 2021. He recently signed a one-year renewal with Verdes but at the same time has signed as BMNT coach until September.

“For now, I’ll be managing both teams,” Pérez said in an exclusive interview with Breaking Belize News.

Perez coached youth teams for approximately ten years in Madrid before going to China in 2018. There, he coached youth and 3rd Division teams. He returned to Spain in 2019 where he coached the Alcorcón youth team for two years before joining Verdes.

“Adapting to Belize’s football and culture was difficult but it turned out alright. We had the opportunity to play at CONCACAF and in the League, we won the championship. So, it’s a beautiful experience,” Pérez said.

“The National team is also a good challenge,” he said. “We will try to develop Belize’s football. There is a good nucleus of players, particularly the young ones. We’re going to try to establish our methodology, a football style that is different than what people here are accustomed to. We’ll try to represent well in the CONCACAF Nations Cup which starts in June.”

Pérez said he wants a team that has good ball possession and is aggressive when it doesn’t have the ball.

“I’m a coach who likes to have ball possession, to have a team that is ambitious with the ball, but when it’s time to defend that we are protagonists as well. We must be a team that defends from back to front, that pressures strongly when it loses the ball. I want my team to be attractive, that people like to see, that plays good football, that we are protagonists when we attack and when we defend.”

Pérez said that generational changes must be done slowly because the National Team is expected to win or at least progress every time it plays, but he said that he along with his technical team are going to be calling the players.

“The players are assimilating well,” he said. “They’ve come a bit tired because this callup comes right after the Christmas break, but the players are happy and are working well. I believe that we are well prepared for the games against Nicaragua.”

The BMNT travels to Managua, Nicaragua on Wednesday and will play against the Nicaraguan National Team on Saturday, January 29 and Tuesday, February 1. Both games will be at 7:00 pm.
