Tracy Taegar Panton wants to lead the United Democratic Party

Posted: Tuesday, January 25, 2022. 8:01 am CST.

By Benjamin Flowers: Following Patrick Faber’s resignation as Leader of the United Democratic Party (UDP) and the resulting leadership void that needs to be filled, Albert Constituency Area Representative Tracy Taegar Panton has offered to fill the void.

Taegar Panton took to Facebook to announce her interest in leading the UDP, noting that Faber’s decision to step down was the best thing to do under the circumstances.

“As the first woman in Belize to offer herself to lead a mass political party, I have no illusions that this will be an easy undertaking. It is, however, one that I am willing to embrace fully,” she said.

She added that her announcement of interest to lead the party comes with the blessing of the UDP National Organization for Women.

Faber announced his departure as Leader yesterday via pre-recorded message, following allegations of domestic abuse against him that were subsequently retracted.

Faber’s leadership was not without its challenges, having been voted out by his own party as Leader of the Opposition in Parliament and an attempt at having him recalled as leader last year.
