By Aaron Humes: Whether it is a parliamentarian such as Patrick Faber or an ordinary man on the street, “we must all call [domestic violence] out” when it happens, Senator responsible for Trade Unions and Civil Society Elena Smith said today.
Smith is one of four women appointed as Senators (President Carolyn Trench-Sandiford presides over the 13-member body along with Erica Jang, Isabel Bennett, and Sheena Pitts), and they are joined by five women in the House of Representatives – the PUP’s Dolores Balderamos-Garcia, Minister of Human Development and her Minister of State Elvia Vega Samos and the UDP’s Tracey Taegar-Panton and Denise Barrow along with Speaker Valerie Woods.
Of the cadre, only Balderamos-Garcia, Taegar-Panton, and now Smith have issued public statements to our knowledge among seated members.
Eschewing the political dimensions, Smith focused on the behaviour itself, which she said for the record she would never support, and called for structures to be put in place to protect men and women from its effects.
