By Benjamin Flowers: The Public Service Union, in the wake of the allegations of domestic abuse made against outgoing United Democratic Party (UPD) leader Patrick Faber, has condemned domestic violence in all its forms and challenged how society deals with the issue.

The Women’s Committee of the PSU issued a statement today, joining the line of entities that have expressed their disappointment and disgust for the acts Faber has been accused of. The PSU acknowledged Faber’s resignation with the pending effect on January 31 but feels that greater emphasis needs to be made particularly as to how the issue at large affects women and girls disproportionately.

“In addition, we as a country need to stop being hypocritical about Domestic Violence only when it involves public figures, as daily women and young girls are abused by ordinary citizens and other professionals,” the PSU said.

The union called for the Commissioner of Police to include reports of Domestic Violence in his weekly address to the media, noting that if those crimes are left unaddressed, these violations pose serious consequences for current and future generations.

“The effects of violence can remain for a lifetime and can pass from one generation to another. Violence against women and girls is an extreme manifestation of gender inequality and systemic gender-based discrimination,” the PSU added, lamenting that the country observed 16 Days of Activism against gender-based violence only a few weeks ago.

The PSU is calling on the justice system, other stakeholders in the protection of human rights, and society at large to take a stand to end domestic violence, and encouraged all victims to reach out to relevant authorities for assistance.
