By Aaron Humes: Nineteen constituency leaders banding together under the banner of the Caucus for Change today announced they would endorse Mesopotamia area representative Moses “Shyne” Barrow to become the next leader of the United Democratic Party (UDP).

In a statement to Breaking Belize News (BBN) this evening Barrow said, “I am extremely humbled and grateful for the unanimous endorsement from the 19 Constituencies which represents Caucus for Change. I will work arduously along with the 19 Constituency Leaders from the Caucus for Change, all delegates, all the other Caretakers and Party faithful to stand up for the Belizean People, hold the Government accountable and lead the UDP to victory in the next General Elections.”

The Caucus has representation from all constituencies in Corozal, two in Orange Walk, several in Belize City and all three Belize District Rural constituencies, the majority of constituencies in Cayo District including Belmopan, and all four southern constituencies as well.

The Caucus’ statement said it met in open session today with Barrow and the other declared candidate for party leader, Albert area representative Tracey Taegar-Panton. In explaining its choice, the group said, “It is the firm belief of the Caucus that Hon. Shyne is best suited to lead the Party at this time given his vision, decisive leadership, resourcefulness, and global exploits that continue to promote Belize. The Caucus calls on all to unite behind Hon. Barrow as we face the challenges ahead. Onward to victory!”

Taegar-Panton has the endorsement of the party’s women’s organization, the National Organization for Women (NOW).

Party Leader and Leader of the Opposition Patrick Faber, who is reportedly out of the country at this time, has announced he intends to step down formally on Monday, January 31, after which an interim party leader will be named and a new Leader of the Opposition selected from among the five members in the House. Best reports say Barrow will be named to this position as well.
