Tracy Taegar Panton maintains bid for leadership of the UDP

By Benjamin Flowers: On Sunday, Albert division Area Representative Tracy Taegar Panton announced that she maintains her bid to lead the United Democratic Party.

Panton took to her Facebook page, to outline some of her many achievements and contributions to Belize, including her 35 years in the areas of Tourism, Civil Aviation, Culture, Investments, Trade, Commerce, Entrepreneurship, and Governance.

She noted that during her first term as the elected representative, she was appointed as the Minister of State in the Ministry of Economic Development, Petroleum, Investment, Foreign Trade & Commerce and also I led the Cabinet Sub Committee on Investments that helped to facilitate major investments in key economic sectors. She added that she oversaw the development of the first National Trade Policy for Belize and led negotiations for, a first of its kind,  Economic Corporation Agreement between Belize and the Government of the Republic of China (Taiwan), among several other feats.

“My decision to offer myself as a candidate to lead the United Democratic Party is the change we need at this time. I am ready to lead the Party. I am ready to lead Belize,” Taegar Panton said.

Her announcement comes after 19 constituency leaders united under the banner of the Caucus for Change announced that they would endorse Mesopotamia Area Representative Moses “Shyne” Barrow to become the next party leader.

The Caucus, which has representation from all constituencies in Corozal, two in Orange Walk, several in Belize City, and all three Belize District Rural constituencies, the majority of constituencies in Cayo District including Belmopan, and all four southern constituencies, issued a statement yesterday saying that they believe that Barrow is the best fit for leadership.

Outgoing Party Leader Patrick Faber’s has not yet officially resigned but is anticipated will do so shortly and make it official tomorrow, January 31. After the anticipated resignation of Faber, the party must select a new leader via convention within 90 days.
