By Aaron Humes: No older person should be subjected to the kind of violence visited on one man in a widely-circulated video, according to the National Council on Ageing (NCA).
On social media a video was seen of an older man being assaulted to the point of unconsciousness in the city of Belmopan for no apparent or justifiable reason – because there is none, says the NCA, adding that it’s not been the first time.
As fountains of wisdom and knowledge in society, the NCA, its partners and the larger society should and do strongly condemn all acts of violence to older persons. In this case, the Council singles out those who stood by and did nothing, and worse, filmed the incident rather than report it. It calls on police to investigate and those who have information to come forward.
It is part of our collective responsibility to protect and preserve the wellbeing of our society to report such incidents, intervene to prevent them where possible and hold the perpetrators accountable and responsible.
