Police actively seeking suspect in connection to Seine Bight murder/double shooting

Posted: Monday, January 31, 2022. 2:45 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: Police are currently seeking a person of interest in connection with a shooting that left one dead and another injured in Seine Bight Village, Stann Creek District, yesterday.

During the incident, which occurred at Gee Pee’s Bar around 12:45 a.m. on Sunday, 32-year-old Ernest Staine was shot several times to the body and died on the spot, while 30-year-old Alrick Munnings, who was shot to the neck.

Head of Communications for the Office of the Commissioner of Police Assistant Superintendent Fitzroy Yearwood, said today that a motive has not been established but police are seeking the major suspect, who cannot be named for legal reasons.

“This person is not yet in police custody and when it comes to the identity of persons wanted for murder we try not to put too much information out there that could be detrimental to the process if this person is found and charged,” Yearwood said. “The laws of Belize are very different from other countries and identifying a suspect for murder via media means or any other means, that could cause some infringement on the case.”

Yearwood also noted that there is the possibility the bar owner and Munnings could face charges for violating curfew; however, that would be up to the southern regional commander to decide.

Munnings was taken to the Placencia Polyclinic and later transferred to the Southern Regional Hospital where he is listed as being in stable condition.

Investigations into the matter continue.
