By Rubén Morales Iglesias: G-Flow’s Giovanni Lovell won Race 1 organized by the Cycling Federation of Belize (CFB) in Cayo on Sunday, January 30.
The 80-mile race started at Garbutt’s Gas Station in Roaring Creek, headed to Loma Luz Boulevard in Santa Elena and back twice.
Lovell won Race 1 in three hours, 26 minutes, and nine seconds (3:26:09) leading a group of ten who all clocked the same time.
Oscar Quiroz of 501 Valvoline Cycling Team was second followed by G-Flow’s Renan Codd in third place. Codd was also the first Junior rider. M&M Engineering’s Carroll Devin Azueta rode in fourth, and G-Flow’s Jyven Gonzalez was fifth. Gonzalez was also the first Under-23 rider to complete the race.
The next five riders were G-Flow’s Shawn Codd (6), 501 Valvoline’s Joslyn Chavarria Jr (7), Westrac Alliance’s Jafari Castro (8), 501 Valvoline’s Derrick Chavarria (9) and independent Shane Jones (10).
G-Flow’s Tevin Chaplin rode in 3:54 later in the 11th position. He was timed at 3:30:03.
501 Valvoline’s Brandon Cattouse, who won the Krem’s New Year’s Day Cycling Classic, was 12th in 3:30:14. Cattouse also won the Masters Category.
Team Cycology’s Dwayne Wade (18) was second in the Masters and Kulture’s Kenroy “Smokes” Gladden (21) finished third.
Twenty-three of 32 riders completed the race.
The CFB said Race 2 is scheduled for Sunday, February 6, 2022.
