By David Ruiz Puga: John Paul II Junior College in Benque Viejo del Carmen will be hosting the annual winter conference for the Consortium of Belize Educational Cooperation (COBEC) on February 3 – 4, 2022 at its campus on Chapel Hill.

The conference with its theme “Finding What Matters” seeks to its participants in reflecting on the lessons garnered in our experience through the pandemic with the purpose of defining more humanistic ways of service through tertiary level education.

The event will be opened by Hon. Francis Fonseca, Minister of Education, Culture, Science, and Technology. A highlight of the event will be a forum that will include administrators of tertiary level institutions in Belize as well as Hon. Dr. Louis Zabaneh, Minister of State in the Ministry of Education. The keynote address will be delivered by Rev. Fr. Beau Schweitzer, Chancellor of John Paul II Junior College.

A series of break-out sessions are scheduled to happen in the afternoon as part of the ongoing professional training and will include topics ranging from research, education and pedagogy, culture and the humanities, as well as archaeology and history, facilitated by visiting and local scholars from various institutions at home and abroad.

An alumni forum featuring graduates from John Paul II Junior College will open the business meeting of the conference on the second day. The day will also feature the Belize Tertiary Options and Opportunities Expo sponsored by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Science, and Technology.

The conference will close with a courtesy field trip to Xunantunich, Poustinia Land Art Park, and a historical tour of Benque Viejo on Saturday.

It is estimated that close to 100 participants from COBEC partners in Belize and the United States will access the conference virtually or in person.

COBEC was formed in the mid-1980’s with the mission of promoting mutual understanding and collaboration through bilateral and multilateral programs and activities among educational institutions of higher learning in Belize and the United States.
