Belize Sugar Industries sees positive side of CCJ judgment

By Aaron Humes: According to BSI/ASR communications director William Neal, the company has made its point with regard to the regional sugar market despite not getting what it asked for on Tuesday from the Caribbean Court of Justice.

The seven-member panel ruled that Belize had not made an arguable case based on its evidence for Trinidad and Tobago to explain why it allowed brown sugar to be imported from Guatemala and Honduras from 2018 to 2020 without imposition of the Common External Tariff (CET).

While the evidence provided by BSI was mostly not acceptable to the CCJ, Neal said BSI was vindicated by subsequent developments which opened up access to CARICOM for Belizean brown sugar. More on this later.
