Tracey Taegar-Panton denies going easy on Patrick Faber; says she spoke to him the day the domestic violence report was filed

By Aaron Humes: For the first time, Albert area representative Tracey Taegar-Panton has revealed she spoke directly with embattled Leader of the United Democratic Party (UDP) Patrick Faber on the day his fiancée, Dr. Shanika Arnold, filed a complaint with the Family Violence Unit of the Belize Police Department.

Taegar-Panton, speaking exclusively with Breaking Belize News (BBN), was fending off accusations by Leader of the Opposition and fellow candidate for party leader Moses “Shyne” Barrow made on Tuesday, that she had been too soft on Faber for his several allegations of domestic violence against past and present partners because she wanted the support of his delegates in future leadership conventions.

“In fact, when I became aware of the allegations, I met with the Party Leader on the same day that matter was leaked to the press…I visited him that afternoon, and I said to him, if these allegations are true Party Leader, you will need to step aside, because we were very clear as the leadership team of the party that we could not entertain any future incidents of this nature,” said Taegar-Panton.

She noted that she was the first to issue a public statement at the time of the first reported incident last May, but when we pointed out that the second meeting was a “private conversation” between her and Faber, she responded that as a member of the leadership team she would not pre-empt the official decision-making bodies of the party by speaking publicly. She also noted that at the time of the first incident, the party was moved to give Faber a second chance after he declared that he intended to seek help.

“I categorically reject that out of hand; there is absolutely no truth or merit to that narrative,” Taegar-Panton reiterated in respect of any allegations of ‘soft-soaping’ the very serious domestic violence allegations against her party leader.
